Travel Health

If you’re travelling to certain parts of the world, you’re at greater risk of contracting serious diseases if you haven’t been vaccinated against them.

Our expert team can help you work out which vaccines you may need. Just let us know where you’re travelling to and we can offer advice on the travel risks and the vaccines you’ll need.

Tick Borne Encephalitis
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection spread by tick bites. Ticks infected with the virus are found in parts of Europe and Asia. In the UK, the risk of getting it is very low. 2 injections of the vaccine can protect you for about a year, and a 3rd injection can protect you for about 3 years.
Malaria Doxycycline
Both adults and children should take one dose of doxycycline per day starting a day or two before traveling to the area where malaria transmission occurs. They should take one dose per day while there, and for 28 consecutive days after leaving.
Malaria Lariam
Malaria is caused by a parasite which is passed from one person to another by mosquito bites. Lariam interferes with the growth of the parasites in red blood cells. Lariam is effective in preventing malaria and is recommended in certain parts of the world.
Malaria Malarone Generic
Malarone is an effective branded treatment used to prevent and treat malaria. It should be taken every day if you are travelling to a malaria risk area.
Rifaximin Traveller’s Diarrhoea
Rifaximin (Xifaxan) is a non-absorbed antibiotic for the treatment of adult traveler’s diarrhoea caused by enterotoxigenic strains of Escherichia coli.
Chickenpox

Chickenpox is a common childhood infection. Usually, it’s mild and complications are rare. Almost all children develop immunity to chickenpox after infection, so most only catch it once. The disease can be more severe in adults.

Shingles

The shingles vaccine is expected to reduce your risk of getting shingles. If you do go on to have the disease, your symptoms may be milder and the illness shorter.

MMR Vaccine
The MMR vaccine is a safe and effective combined vaccine. It protects against 3 serious illnesses: measles, mumps, rubella (german measles). These highly infectious conditions can easily spread between unvaccinated people.
Japanese Encephalitis
Japanese encephalitis occurs mainly in many parts of Asia and the Western Pacific, particularly in rural areas. It is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It does not spread from person to person.
Rabies
People can get rabies if they have contact with the saliva or neural tissue of an infected animal, for example through a bite or scratch, and do not receive appropriate medical care, including rabies vaccine.
Oral Typhoid
Typhoid fever is common in many regions of the world, including parts of East and Southeast Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Meningitis B
The MenB vaccine will protect your baby against infection by meningococcal group B bacteria. These bacteria are responsible for about 9 in every 10 meningococcal infections in young children.
Meningitis ACWY
The MenACWY vaccine is given by a single injection into the upper arm and protects against 4 strains of the meningococcal bacteria – A, C, W and Y – which cause meningitis and blood poisoning (septicaemia).
Typhoid
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection that can spread throughout the body, affecting many organs. Without prompt treatment, it can cause serious complications and can be fatal.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a liver infection that is spread through blood, semen and vaginal fluids. It’s more common in Asia and Africa than in the UK.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by a virus that’s spread in the poo of an infected person. It’s uncommon in the UK, but certain groups are at increased risk including people travelling to places with poor sanitation.
Diptheria, Tetanus, Polio DPT
If you are travelling to a risk area for polio or diphtheria, you may need the polio, diphtheria and tetanus vaccine. Whether you require this booster depends on the date of your last vaccination.
Cholera
Cholera is an infection that can cause severe diarrhoea. It’s not found in the UK, but there’s a very small risk of getting it while travelling in some parts of the world.
